Before Printing Flyers, Get to Know Your Audience
Advertising your business with flyers can be an extremely effective way to get more customers, but you need to know how to make your flyers effective. If your flyer’s message and offer do not match your audience, your response will inevitably suffer.
The first step for any successful advertising campaign (flyers, direct mail, email, TV) is to know who your target audience is, and more importantly, how to make your offer/service/product irresistible to them.
Male or Female?
One way to find your target audience is to research what gender is most likely to buy or sign up. By knowing what gender is your ideal “target”, you are able to customize the flyer’s copy, graphics, even colors to best match your audience. For instance, if your target market is female, you may want to use light, pastel colors, san-serif font (Century Gothic seems to work well with this demographic), and have a picture of an attractive woman within your flyer.
What Ages are Most Likely to Buy
Another great way to determine your target audience is by determining which age demographic is most likely to buy. If your target age category is children, you need to make sure that you have more pictures than words.
On the other hand, if you are targeting elderly people, you can have more words in your flyer, but try to stay away from small fonts or hard-to-read typefaces. Some age group may be going through important life moments, which you can use within your flyer to become more relevant to that specific target. For example, use pictures of cute babies when targeting moms 19-34 years old – or college-themed images and language when targeting recent graduates.
How Much Money Do They Make?
A great way you can get to know your audience is by finding out their average income. If your audience has a low average income, then you need to make sure that your product or service is within their buying capacity. If you offer financing plans make sure you have available somewhere inside your flyer. If your audience is more affluent, you should point out why your service is better than the rest, and reinforce trust in your brand.
Study Your Competition
Knowing your audience is one of the best ways to increase your flyer’s response and your profits. An easy way to jump-start your audience research is to study your competition (local or national).
Pay attention to their flyers, TV commercials, email specials – see what images/messages remain throughout their different advertisements. Chances are, they’ve found that these specific images and messaging is profitable and continue to use them with success. Take this research and improve on it and you’ll outsell the competition and spend less money doing so.
