What You Should Know about the USPS Bulk Mailing Rate
Marketing is a complex endeavor. While there are many different strategies, casting a wide net to the broadest possible audience is generally considered advantageous.
For this reason, businesses still rely on the United States Postal Service (USPS) to get out information, even if they combine it with a digital campaign. This is especially true for targeted efforts, like special sales, coupons, or events.
When it comes to the USPS bulk mailing rate, there are a few things to consider. Keep reading to find out what they are. The information below will help you get the most out of your marketing projects.
Bulk Mailing Can Save You Time and Money
Regardless of which type of bulk mailing option you go with, doing so will save you money. In general, you can expect to save between 35 and 67 percent over regular mailing rates.
Bulk mailing also can be straightforward, provided you have the right tools and know-how. It could save you and your staff a lot of time and headaches.
It also is a great way to market your business. It allows you to reach a broader audience or one that digital campaigns are less likely to contact. It also allows you to target particular areas and neighborhoods, with very little effort.
There are Different USPS Bulk Shipping Options
Regardless of how you send bulk mail with USPS, you will receive a discount. However, there are two main options to consider in terms of delivery time. These are standard and first-class mail.
Standard mail is commonly referred to as "marketing mail" or "third-class mail." It is the cheapest of the two options.
With both standard and first-class mail, USPS rates will depend on the type of material you are mailing. In general, you can expect them to run between 17 and 51 cents per item.
The biggest difference between standard and first-class mail is delivery time. First-class mail always takes priority over standard mail. Most local deliveries are guaranteed for one to two days, while you can ship anywhere in the country in under five days (in most cases).
Standard mail will invariably take a little longer. That is because it is processed on a "time available" basis. That means first-class mail always gets processed first.
Note that standard mail may not be much slower for local deliveries. The delay variables increase when getting mailed to farther-away locations. In most cases, mailed items will arrive one and two days later than first-class mail, and sometimes a week or more longer when sending out-of-state.
In general, standard mail can be a great option for campaigns that are not time-sensitive. On the other hand, if you are trying to get the word out about an upcoming sale or incentive, then first-class mail may be the way to go.
Each Type Has Distinct Criteria
Both standard and first-class mail have similar criteria for leveraging discounts. This includes addressing the mail according to USPS labeling standards.
Also, all pieces must be presorted. This includes using an automated system, such as those utilizing barcodes, or a simple sort based on zip code.
Note that these two options can also impact the rate. Bulk mailings using presort automation will receive the most discount.
There are some differences between standard and first-class bulk mail standards as well. For instance, when sending standard bulk mail, you must have 200 pieces or more. With first-class mail, that threshold goes up to 500.
Standard mail gives you more leeway on weight. You can mail items that weigh as much as 3.5 ounces, whereas first-class mail can weigh no more than an ounce per item.
Dimensions come into play as well. A "letter" is any piece that is 6 1/8 x 11 1/2 x 1/4 inches or less, even if it is not an envelope. A "flat" is any piece that is 12 x 15 x 3/4 inches or less and must be able to bend.
Postcard mailers are considered either "letters" or "flats," depending on their size. If your item is larger than the flat dimensions, or any size and inflexible, it is considered a parcel and is not eligible for bulk mailing.
Rates Will Vary Based on Mailer Type
Besides delivery duration, the other thing that can impact the USPS bulk mailing rate is the type of items you are sending. For instance, bound printed matter will incur a higher rate than a presorted standard or first-class marketing flier. So will media mail, which includes books, videotapes, or other media.
Nonprofits Can Save Even More
If you work for a nonprofit, you can leverage even more savings, regardless of the type of bulk mailing option you choose. In general, you will pay an average of 10 percent less than normal rates.
For instance, if you are mailing postcards standard mail, the rate will be between 17 and 23 cents (depending on the size), versus the 33 to 36 cents regular rate
Note that, to access these discounted rates, you must register as a nonprofit with USPS. There are also standards for not allowing private individuals or shareholders to utilize these benefits.
Registration and Fees Are Required
Finally, keep in mind that before you start getting a mailing campaign ready to go out the door, every business using the service must get a permit. You can pick up an application to do so at any Post Office. They will then issue you a nine-digit mailer identification number, that you will use when sending bulk mail.
The permit also requires an annual fee, which is $245. That is in addition to mail costs.
Note that many reputable marking companies fold this fee into their rates. That means you only pay one price to access bulk rates along with media consulting services.
